These routines often include daily exfoliation, double cleansing, antibacterial soaps, scented body scrubs, and various shower oils. However, dermatologists are raising concerns about the potential harm these practices can cause to both your skin and the environment.

Dr. Olga Bunimovich, a dermatologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical College, expressed her surprise at the complexity of these routines. “I’m kind of appalled by the shower routines,” she said. She emphasized that many of these steps are unnecessary and can actually be detrimental to your skin’s health.

Understanding the Basics of Proper Showering

A simple and effective shower routine doesn’t require ten steps or an array of products. According to experts, a daily shower with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cleanser is sufficient for most people. Afterward, applying a hydrating lotion or oil can help maintain your skin's moisture.

It’s important not to stay in the shower for too long or use excessively hot water. Both can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Dermatologists recommend keeping showers short and using water at a comfortable temperature.

Choosing the Right Cleansers

When it comes to choosing a soap, opt for one designed for sensitive skin. While antibacterial soaps are popular, they can be too harsh for daily use. They may dry out your skin and disrupt its natural balance. However, they can be beneficial for individuals with specific conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, which causes painful boils and abscesses on the skin.

Oils can be useful after a shower, but it’s important to understand their role. They act as a sealant rather than a moisturizer. When used on damp skin, they help lock in moisture that the water has provided. Dr. Lisa Akintilo, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Health, noted that combining cleansing with hydration is essential for proper skincare.

The Myth of Double Cleansing

Some influencers promote the idea of double cleansing, which involves using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one. While this practice is common in facial skincare, especially when wearing makeup, experts say it’s unnecessary for the full body. Dr. Bunimovich pointed out that overusing soap can be harmful. She recommends washing only the areas that require it, such as the private parts and skin folds.

Exfoliating with Caution

Exfoliation is meant to remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture. However, doing it daily can lead to issues, particularly for those with dry skin or conditions like eczema or acne. Manual exfoliants like body scrubs or rough loofahs should be used sparingly to avoid irritation.

A gentler alternative is using products containing lactic or glycolic acid. These can provide effective exfoliation without the risk of overdoing it. However, even these should not be used too frequently.

Saving Water and Protecting the Environment

Showers account for nearly 17% of Americans’ indoor water use, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. With many states experiencing drought conditions, conserving water has become increasingly important. Shortening your shower time not only helps the environment but also preserves your skin’s natural oils.

A quick, lukewarm shower is usually enough to keep you clean while maintaining your skin’s health. By simplifying your routine, you can protect both your skin and the planet.
