Kirby Smart Receives Strong SEC Signal From Top Georgia Recruit

Georgia's 2026 Recruiting Class Gains Major Momentum
A significant development in the world of college football took place in Athens over the weekend, as Kirby Smart secured a major commitment from Tyriq Green, a four-star athlete from Buford. This move not only strengthens Georgia’s 2026 recruiting class but also sends a strong message about the program's ability to attract top-tier talent.
Tyriq Green's decision was no small feat, as he had several serious contenders vying for his attention. However, it was Georgia that ultimately won him over. Green emphasized the importance of relationships and trust in his decision-making process. “I’m a real good relationship guy,” he shared, adding, “I’ve got to be comfortable where ever I am. They could be like a family for me, and that would be a great spot for me. Then, just being developed and getting help, going to the next level to the NFL.”
This sentiment reflects the deep connection Green feels with the Bulldogs, which is evident in his statement: “I am a Georgia boy playing SEC football for a program that wins a lot of big games.” His commitment has been a blow to Auburn’s 2026 recruiting efforts, which currently have only nine commitments. The Tigers also lost Denairius Gray to Kentucky, further complicating their recruitment strategy.
Green joins Graham Houston, another Buford product, as the second player from his high school to commit to Georgia this cycle. At 6’1 and 205 pounds, Green is a versatile athlete who played multiple positions during his junior season. His performance on the field was impressive, with five interceptions, five pass breakups, 28 tackles, and a 107-yard interception return touchdown. On offense, he recorded 77 carries for 527 yards and eight touchdowns, along with a TD catch and a 77-yard punt return.
Green's athletic abilities extend beyond football. He helped his high school’s 4×100 relay team achieve a time of 39.81 seconds, the second-fastest high school time in the nation. His personal best in the 100m is 10.9 seconds, a testament to his speed and agility. Kirby Smart recognized these talents and saw how they could fit into the Bulldogs' defensive scheme.
“Kirby loves my game a lot,” Green said. “Some people will say I’m a running back, but he will always tell me I’m a DB.” For Green, defense is more than just a role; it's where he feels most at home. “I just love defense a lot. Just being able to fly around,” he added. However, Green is open to playing any position if needed. “I’m getting recruited to play defense, but if they need me on offense, I will be there.”
Another Big Win for Georgia
Green wasn’t the only standout to commit to Georgia on Saturday. Kaiden Prothro, a tight end ranked as the No. 2 TE in the country by On3 and Rivals, also pledged to the Bulldogs. Standing at 6’6 and 220 pounds, Prothro had an outstanding junior season, recording 1,203 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns. His coach, Rich Fendley, described him as a hybrid tight end who could make a significant impact on the field.
Prothro is also an all-state basketball player and a baseball standout, making him a highly sought-after recruit. Georgia’s tight ends coach, Todd Hartley, made multiple visits to Bowdon this year, and his efforts paid off with Prothro’s commitment. This addition brings Georgia’s 2026 class to 29 commitments, placing them at No. 2 in the nation behind USC.
With the addition of Prothro and Green, Georgia is not only building a top-ranked class but also creating a powerful team that could challenge even the strongest programs. Kirby Smart’s ability to secure top talent continues to solidify Georgia’s position as a powerhouse in college football. As the recruiting landscape evolves, the Bulldogs are proving they can compete with the best.
