Chargers' Edge Rusher Set for Breakout Season in Year Three

The Los Angeles Chargers Make Strategic Roster Move
The Los Angeles Chargers have made a significant decision by releasing Joey Bosa, a nine-year veteran and five-time Pro Bowl defensive end. Bosa spent his entire professional career with the team, but the move was necessary to create cap space for other players. This strategic adjustment could open up more opportunities for others on the defensive line, especially as the team looks to rebuild and strengthen its roster.
With Bosa no longer on the team, the spotlight has shifted to Tuli Tuipulotu, a key player in the defensive line who is now seen as a potential breakout star. According to Joseph Acosta of SB Nation, Tuipulotu is poised for a standout season in the AFC West. Acosta highlighted that Tuipulotu has been waiting for a full-time role since entering the league and that his chance to shine is now.
“Tuipulotu has been waiting for a full time role since entering the league. Now that Joey Bosa is a Bill, his chance to breakout is now. He’s super powerful and can set the edge in the run game and wins with power in the pass rush department. Tuipulotu increased his pressure rate to 10.5% from his rookie year, and with an expanded role on the team he should be able to get that even higher.”
Acosta also noted that the Chargers’ defense is well-coached, and having Khalil Mack next to Tuipulotu will be beneficial. However, Tuipulotu is viewed as the next in line for a leap in performance as a pass rusher.
Tuli Tuipulotu's Potential
Last season, Tuli Tuipulotu led the team in sacks with 8.5 in his second season. His performance has shown promise, and with the departure of Bosa, he is expected to take on a larger role this year. During locker room cleanups after the conclusion of last season, Tuipulotu expressed his readiness to become the top EDGE rusher with the team.
“I feel like I’m ready. Whatever needs to be done, I’ma do it,” Tuipulotu told reporters. “I think I’ve showed that. Whatever the coach needs me to do, I’ll do it.”
Despite the return of Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree on one-year deals, Tuipulotu is anticipated to see increased action. The Chargers’ defensive coordinator has described Tuipulotu as an “ascending superstar type of player.”
Learning from Greats
Entering the league, Tuipulotu had the opportunity to learn from two multiple-time Pro Bowlers: Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. He spoke to reporters about the influence these mentors have had on his development.
“[Khalil Mack has] been my OG. He’s paved the way, he’s walked me into the league,” Tuipulotu said. “He’s showed me the roots and showed me the way to go and how to go about certain things. I appreciate him. Him and Joey.”
Mack himself praised Tuipulotu, highlighting his technique and attention to detail.
“Tuli is a special player. I’ve been saying that ever since he stepped foot in the building,” Mack said. “Knowing who he is and knowing what he brings on a consistent basis, he was already ready for [the starting role]. He’s been a starter essentially for the past three years…”
“It’s not going to be no surprise to me when he’s a 10, 12-plus sack guy this year.”
As the Chargers look to build a strong defense, Tuli Tuipulotu is emerging as a key player with the potential to make a significant impact this season. With the right support and opportunities, he could be the driving force behind the team’s defensive success.
