A’ja Wilson Leads Aces to Thrilling Victory Over Golden State Valkyries

In a high-stakes showdown at the Michelob Ultra Arena, the Las Vegas Aces secured a thrilling 104-102 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The game was marked by intense competition, clutch performances, and a dramatic finish that showcased the resilience of both teams.

A’ja Wilson, the reigning WNBA MVP, played a pivotal role in the win. After hitting a pullup midrange shot early in the game, she quickly found her rhythm, leading a seven-point run that set the tone for the Aces. Wilson’s performance was nothing short of dominant, as she finished with 34 points and 16 rebounds, despite coming off a right wrist sprain. Her first-half contribution of 25 points highlighted her ability to carry the team when it mattered most.

Wilson’s return to the court was no small feat. She had been listed as questionable on the injury report due to an MRI-diagnosed wrist sprain sustained during a loss to the New York Liberty. She missed the Aces’ previous game against the Washington Mystics but made a strong comeback in this match. Reflecting on her recovery, Wilson credited the Aces’ medical staff for their support and guidance.

“It’s very hard for me to sit out games, very hard for me to follow directions because I want to be out there with my team,” Wilson said after the game. “I’m going to continue to play through it because they’re going to make sure that I’m ready and I’m comfortable.”

Jackie Young Steals the Spotlight in the Fourth Quarter

While Wilson led the charge in the first half, it was guard Jackie Young who took control in the third quarter and carried the team through the final stretch. Young scored 30 points, including the Aces’ last 10 points of the game. Her performance was especially crucial in the fourth quarter, where she faced immense pressure from the Valkyries.

With the score tied at 94-all and just under two minutes left, Young responded with back-to-back baskets to put the Aces ahead. Despite the Valkyries’ efforts to close the gap, Young remained composed, hitting all 11 of her free throws. Her flawless performance at the line proved to be the difference in the final moments.

“She just made big free throws after big free throws,” said Aces coach Becky Hammon. “Those are hard to make, especially when the other team’s making 3s and you’re only making two free throws. Every time that score inches a little bit closer, there’s a lot more pressure.”

A Game Filled with Personal Rivalries

The matchup between the Aces and the Valkyries was not just about the scoreboard—it was also a personal one for many players. Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase, who previously served as an assistant with the Aces during their 2022 and 2023 championship seasons, had a significant impact on the roster. She brought in Kate Martin and Tiffany Hayes, both former Aces players, to bolster the Valkyries’ lineup.

Despite the emotional ties, the Aces focused on their goal of avoiding embarrassment on home soil. The team remembered a 95-68 loss to the Valkyries earlier in the season and used that as motivation. Wilson described the game as “a little personal” and emphasized the importance of winning at home.

“We didn’t want to be embarrassed on our own court,” she said. “We know what happened last time we played the Valkyries there.”

A Historic Season for A’ja Wilson

This game further solidified A’ja Wilson’s place in WNBA history. With 19 double-doubles featuring 30 or more points, she holds the record for the most such achievements in league history. Only Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has recorded a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds this season, highlighting Wilson’s dominance.

As the Aces continue their journey through the season, their ability to overcome challenges and perform under pressure will be key to their success. With Wilson and Young leading the way, the team is proving that they can handle any adversity thrown their way.
